Hotel pickup in Positano, the park ticket in the fare, and about two hours in the ruins with an archaeological guide, in a group of no more than 12. There is no railway on the coast, so a Pompeii day from Positano is a road day, and this one is done in four to five hours door to door. You are back at your hotel in time for a late lunch.

A road day, so it runs when the sea keeps the boats in.

What a half day at Pompeii from Positano is actually like

Pompeii is about an hour and a half from Positano by road, over the ridge of the peninsula and round the Bay of Naples, and there is no train on this side to take you there. This tour solves the journey: a van collects you from your hotel, drives you to the park, and brings you back.

At the gate you skip the ticket line, because entry is already in the fare; the park's full ticket is €20 on its own. Then comes the reason you went: about two hours, and 2 hours 15 minutes on the listing's own stop list, walking the ancient city with an archaeological guide who makes the ruins come alive, knows where to go when it rains, and still leaves you time for photographs.

The group is capped at 12, and one April reviewer had only nine, close enough to hear every word. The pace through the ruins is brisk, and one traveller wished it had been longer: two hours is enough for the highlights, not for the whole city.

Lunch is not included, and the day is short enough to eat before pickup or after you are back. On a calm day, the boats to Capri leave from Positano's pier instead. The other ways to see Pompeii from the coast are on Pompeii tours from Positano.

Where you are collected in Positano

The operator collects you from your hotel in Positano and drops you back there. Because the town's lanes are mostly steps, the van waits at the nearest point the road reaches, usually on the one-way loop through town, so tell the operator where your hotel is when you book.

Pickup times are sent by message the day before. If you are staying up at Montepertuso or Nocelle, give the operator your exact address. How the town's road and bus stops fit together is on getting around Positano.
