Most of what makes a day here is invisible from the road. From the sea the town reads as one
steep block of colour above a grey beach, with the tiled dome at its foot. East of it, the
cliffs drop straight into deep water, cut by the gorge at Furore and the coves boats stop in.
At the foot of the town, the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta rises above Spiaggia Grande and
the pier. Across the water, Capri's Faraglioni and the Blue Grotto are where the island days go.
Captions say what is in the frame and stop. Positano is named only where the dome, the beach
or the stacked houses make it unmistakable; a coast town seen from the water is called a coast
town unless it could only be one place.
