On the boat days you leave Positano's pier in the morning, follow the Sorrento coast to Punta Campanella, and cross to Capri, where the boat circles past the grottoes and the Faraglioni before giving you three to four hours ashore. On the hydrofoil day a guide takes you round the island by boat and by road. You are back in Positano in the late afternoon, often after a swim off Li Galli. Capri's best views are from the sea: the White and Green Grottoes, the arch through the Faraglioni, the cliffs below Anacapri. A ferry lands you at Marina Grande and shows you none of them.
The boats stop at the grotto on their way round, so you do not have to find a boat to it from the harbour. It still closes in a high sea, and entry is paid there, about €18 a head.
You board at your own pier, the skipper handles the sea, and the time ashore is set. You simply step off and choose between Capri town and Anacapri.
The private boat from Positano takes up to five, so a family or a group of friends sets its own stops and can stay longer where it likes.
The ferry from Positano's pier is the independent way to Capri: about 30 minutes in season. The choice is between a crossing and a day on the water.

If you want the island's streets and your own timetable, the ferry is enough; if you want the island from the water, take the boat. Going alone is set out in day trips without a tour.
The boats include the crossing, a skipper, snacks and drinks, and some towels and masks. The hydrofoil day includes a guide all day and road transport on the island. What you pay on the day is Capri's landing tax, €5 a head from April to October; the Blue Grotto, about €18 a head; and on some boats a landing fee or fuel. Lunch is yours on most, except the semi-private boat from Sorrento.
Shared fares run from $183 to $620 a person, and the private boat from Positano is $673 for up to five. The days run seven to eight hours, starting early. Check where yours starts: some start in Sorrento, and their cards say so. Book a week or more ahead in summer, pick a calm day, and keep a road day as your fallback.
