How to Get to Positano
You reach Positano by road or by sea, never by rail, and which one you choose decides how much of your first day you spend travelling. If you only have one day and you are based in Rome, the day tours from Rome to Positano do the travelling for you.
No train reaches Positano
There is no Positano train station, and no railway anywhere on the Amalfi Coast. The nearest railheads are Sorrento, at the end of the Circumvesuviana line from Naples, and Salerno, on the main line from Rome and Naples. From either, you continue by bus, ferry or car, so plan the last leg before you book the train.
From Naples airport
Private transfer
About 60 km by road, roughly an hour to an hour and a half depending on traffic. A driver meets you at arrivals and can set you down on the road through town, the least tiring way to arrive with luggage.
Bus or train, then the coast bus
Reach Sorrento by bus or by the Circumvesuviana from Naples, then take the SITA coast bus to Positano. It is the cheapest way and the longest, with a change and your bags on a crowded bus in summer.
Ferry, in season
From roughly April to October you can go from the airport to the port in Naples and take a ferry to Positano's pier. You land at the foot of the town, beside the beach.
From Rome or Naples by train
From Rome, a high-speed train reaches Naples or Salerno in about one to two hours. From Naples continue by Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and the SITA bus, or by ferry in season; from Salerno the ferry along the coast lands you at Positano's pier. If you would rather not change at all, a private car from Naples does the whole journey.
By ferry, April to October
Several companies serve Positano's pier in season, among them Travelmar, Alicost, NLG, Positano Jet and Alilauro. Timetables change every year, so check the season's schedule with the operator before you travel.
| From | Mode | About how long | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Naples (Molo Beverello) | Ferry | About 70 minutes on the fastest boats | Roughly April to October |
| Sorrento | Ferry | Under an hour | Roughly April to October |
| Capri | Ferry | About 30 minutes | Roughly April to October |
| Amalfi | Ferry | About 25 minutes | Roughly April to October |
| Salerno | Ferry | Over an hour, calling along the coast | Roughly April to October |
By SITA bus from Sorrento or Amalfi
- Buy your ticket before you board, at a newsagent, bar or ticket office. It is not sold on the bus.
- Take the SITA SUD coast bus towards Positano from Sorrento, or from Amalfi in the other direction.
- Get off at Chiesa Nuova for the top of town, or at Sponda, nearer the beach.
- Walk down the lanes, or take the local Mobility Amalfi Coast bus that loops the town.
Both stops and the local bus are covered on getting around Positano.
Driving the coast road
You can drive the SS163, the one road along the coast, but parking in Positano is scarce and the road is narrow and busy in summer. On set days an alternate-plates rule lets only odd or even number plates on the stretch between Vietri sul Mare and Positano from 10:00 to 18:00.
| Period in 2026 | When the plate rule applies |
|---|---|
| 1 June to 31 July | Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays |
| 1 August to 30 September | Every day |
| 1 to 31 October | Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays |
Two-wheelers, residents, blue-badge holders, taxis and buses are exempt. The rule is set by ordinance each year, so check it before you drive.
Private transfers from Naples
A private car is the simplest arrival with luggage, and two of these add a stop at Pompeii on the way.
