Positano Day Trip from Naples: Six Ways Compared

Naples and its port from above, ferries and cruise ships at the quays and Vesuvius across the bay

The short version. You can visit Positano from Naples in a day six ways, and they differ most in the time they leave you in town. The ferry from Molo Beverello gives you nearly five hours, from April to early November. A coach day gives you 75 minutes, a private car about an hour, and the Pompeii coach only a 15-minute view from above.

  • Six ways side by side: where each starts, how long it takes, what it costs
  • How much of the day you spend in Positano itself
  • The last boat and the last train back to Naples
  • What the fares leave out, and what changes in winter

Can you visit Positano from Naples in a day?

Yes, and the catch is worth knowing before you book. No railway reaches the Amalfi Coast, and the town is one to two hours from Naples by road. Most days sold under its name share their hours with Pompeii, Sorrento or Amalfi. So what you are choosing is time in Positano. If you are already staying on the coast, the Pompeii tours from Positano are the shorter day; from Naples, the ruins are on your way.

From Naples: Sorrento, Positano & Amalfi Premium Tour

Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi in one day by road, with free time in each. From $84 per person.

How much time do you get in Positano?

This is the figure that separates the six. From the longest stay to the shortest:

  1. The ferry: about 4 hours 50 minutes. In the 2026 timetable you land at 11:35 and sail at 16:24.
  2. The train and the bus: as long as you like, until the bus that meets your train home.
  3. The private car with a Pompeii guide: 1 hour 20 minutes.
  4. The three-town coach: 75 minutes, after a 15-minute photo stop above the town.
  5. The private car for two: 1 hour.
  6. The Pompeii coach: a 15-minute stop at a viewpoint, and no time in the lanes.
Useful tip: read the word "view". A day sold with a "Positano view" stops above the town for photographs. If you want to walk down to the beach, choose a day that names free time in Positano.

1. The coach that stops in three towns

The lowest fare of the four road days: $84 a person for 8 hours 30 minutes, with no guide and the whole coast in it. The coach collects you at a hotel or meeting point in central Naples and gives you free time in Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi. At Positano you stop for 15 minutes to photograph the town from above, then have 75 minutes in it. Lunch is your own choice or a pre-arranged one. The boat ride in Amalfi is optional, at €15 a person, paid on the day. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours ahead. It suits you if this is your first sight of the coast and you would rather see three towns briefly than one at length.

2. The Pompeii coach with a view of Positano

This day is about Pompeii. The coach leaves from Piazza Garibaldi, from Molo Beverello or from the cruise terminal, with up to 30 guests, and the fare of $112 a person covers your entrance and a live guide in the ruins. It then runs to Sorrento, with panoramic stops at Meta and above Positano. That stop lasts 15 minutes at a viewpoint on the road, and the coach does not go down into the town. The day takes 8 hours, and lunch is included only if you select it. Choose it if the ancient city is the point of your day and Positano is a photograph.

3. A private car and driver for two

Here the price buys the car, not a seat: $508 for a unit of two. The driver collects you anywhere within Naples city limits, at a hotel, the port, the airport or a station. The day runs 8 to 9 hours, with about 2 hours at Pompeii, 1 hour 30 minutes in Sorrento and 1 hour in Positano. A limoncello tasting and water are in the fare. Entrance fees, a guide and lunch are not, so add €20 each for the ruins. The vehicle is listed as wheelchair and stroller accessible.

4. A private car with a Pompeii guide

This one is priced per person, from $177, with a minimum of two. A private licensed guide walks you through Pompeii, and that guide is in the fare; your entrance is not. After the ruins and Sorrento you have 1 hour 20 minutes in Positano, the longest stop of the road days. Pickup is at your hotel, the port or a station in the Naples area. The vehicle is listed as wheelchair accessible too, and how the steps in town work for you is covered in the mobility guide.

Private Pompeii, Sorrento & Positano tour with Licensed Guide

A private car from Naples, a licensed guide in the ruins, then 1 hour 20 minutes in Positano. From $177 per person.

5. The ferry from Molo Beverello

The ferry is the only way that gives you an afternoon. In NLG's 2026 timetable the boats run from Molo Beverello to Positano from 1 April to 3 November. The 10:00 lands you at 11:35, and the 16:24 has you back in Naples at 17:45. From 1 May the timetable adds sailings, and the last boat back moves to 16:35. The 10:40 is not direct: you change boats at Capri.

An adult pays €32 each way, a child of 2 to 12 pays €18.50, and each bag costs €5. You land at the pier on Spiaggia Grande, at the foot of the town, so every minute ashore is a minute in Positano. NLG also sells two day circuits at €67 return that add Amalfi. One gives you Positano from 11:35 to 13:10 and then Amalfi; the other starts in Amalfi and gives you Positano from 14:00 to 16:24. Check NLG's timetable for your date before you travel, because a rough sea cancels sailings.

Did you know? The last boat back to Naples leaves in mid-afternoon: 16:24, or 16:35 from 1 May, in the 2026 timetable. A ferry day has a long lunch in it, and no dinner.

6. The train and the SITA bus

No train reaches Positano: the line from Naples ends at Sorrento, and a bus does the rest. It is the cheapest way and the one with no fixed return.

  1. The Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi to Sorrento takes about 70 minutes. In the timetable in force from 28 March 2026, trains leave about every 36 minutes through the day.
  2. Or the Campania Express, a tourist train with reserved seats on the same line, four times a day each way: €15 one way, €25 return.
  3. The SITA bus from Sorrento takes 40 to 50 minutes to the Chiesa Nuova stop; Sponda is 10 minutes further. Buy your bus ticket before you board.

Your return sets the day. In that timetable the last train from Sorrento to Naples leaves at 22:02, and the last evening buses from Positano reach Sorrento after it has gone. Plan the bus that meets your train, not the last bus. Regional bus and train fares in Campania change from 1 October 2026, so check the price when you buy. Which of the two stops to use is on getting around Positano.

What do the fares leave out?

  • Pompeii: €20 for the ancient city. It is in the fare on the Pompeii coach, and on neither private car.
  • Lunch: yours to pay on all four road days, unless you select or pre-arrange it.
  • The Amalfi boat ride: €15 a person on the three-town coach, if you want it.
  • Ferry luggage: €5 a bag, each way.

How the fares compare across every kind of day is in Positano Tour Prices: What Each Fare Covers.

Can you do it from the Naples cruise port?

Yes. Cruise ships dock at the Stazione Marittima on Molo Angioino, and Molo Beverello, where the Positano ferries leave, is the pier beside it. The Pompeii coach lists the cruise terminal as a starting point, and both private cars collect you at the port. If you take the ferry, set its 17:45 return against your ship's all-aboard time before you buy.

Useful tip: let the car keep the clock. A private car is the only way that works to your timetable. Tell the operator your all-aboard time when you book.

What changes from November to March?

The ferry goes. NLG's Naples to Positano timetable ends on 3 November 2026, and the next season begins in April. The road days do not depend on the boats, so look at each tour's calendar for your winter date. The train and the SITA bus still run. What the town is like in each season is on the best time to visit Positano.

Which way should you choose?

  • You want the most time in town: the ferry, in season.
  • You want the lowest fare and a look at three towns: the three-town coach.
  • Pompeii matters more to you: the Pompeii coach, or a private car.
  • You have limited mobility, or a ship to catch: a private car.
  • You want the lowest cost and no fixed return: the train and the bus.

When is one day not enough?

If an hour in town is not what you came for, stay a night. A one-way private transfer from Naples with a stop at Pompeii takes about 4 hours door to door and turns your journey into half a day out; your entrance to the ruins is not in its fare. The next morning the Positano boat tours leave from the pier on the beach. Which level of the town to sleep on is on where to stay in Positano, and arriving one way, with the plate rule on the coast road, is on how to get to Positano. Once you are there, the ferries work in your favour: day trips without a tour shows you how.
